Busy, Busy, BUSY!

Yes, this is one of those this-is-what-I’m-doing-lately-and-I’m-going-to-pretend-you-care posts.  I have a blog and I’m entitled to do this from time to time.

So I have been working as an editor, full-time, for a publishing company here in town (no, I’m not going to tell you which one) and although I love my job–I mean, come on! You give the writer a full-time gig with benefits and she’s going to be very happy–I find that I’m having to rearrange the time I use to write. I have to rethink my time management skills.

That being said, I’m reading a great book, Hit Lit: Cracking the Code of the Twentieth Century’s Biggest Bestsellers by James W. Hall, and I’m learning a ton! So much, in fact, that I’m holding off on pimping WAKE OF DARKNESS to publishers and I’m reconstructing parts of it, based upon the advice given by Hall.

Hit Lit: Cracking the Code of the Twentieth Century's Biggest Bestsellers It’s already an invaluable resource and I’m just into the first few chapters. Basically, this is me–as a writer–recommending it to you–you know, as a writer. It’s an easy read and is quite entertaining, actually.

So anyways, I’m working on WAKE based on the advice I’m gleaning from this book, and because WAKE is about vampire hunters (and agents are getting tired of the genre even though this one is TOTALLY different), I think I’m just going to publish it as an eBook, which is great thing for you readers, since I will certainly be running it on a free weekend sometime once it’s out.

TRANSMISSIONS FROM DATING LAND is still going strong and has done well so far, despite its limited audience–because really, not everyone is looking for a satirical date book.

Other projects in the works: I’m editing PRINCES, a great novella by my bf, otherwise known as MW2. We’re going to publish it as an eBook sometime soon.

Be sure to check out my tumblr account: http://brainybabe.tumblr.com/ which is just more of my silliness. I tend to jump on there during a lunch break or when I have just a couple of minutes to post something silly or quick. It’s fun.

I’m also thinking of constructing an anthology of short stories which will include some flash fiction from myself, perhaps a short story or two from MW2, and then an open call for some unpublished little ditties from some of my writer friends. That one would likely be a free eBook, with the intent to get the word out on some great writers out there who would otherwise not have a voice.

I’m also playing around with a new story, tentatively entitled SAIL. It’s a dieselpunk story with some interesting magical/superhero-type characters. I’m having fun twirling the characters around in my head and figuring out their back stories.

So in addition to all that, I’m apartment shopping and doing the working single mom thing; loving my bf more every day (yes, that was uber-mushy, get over it), enjoying life, and looking for the next awesome thing that will be coming along soon, whether it’s a new writing project, a project house, a fun trip, or whatever!

Day Three – Artistic Adventures of MW^2

UPDATE: I saved a draft of this post and neglected to post it while MW2 was still away.  Then he came back home, and well, my priorities weren’t exactly with posting on the blog.  At any rate, here is the third and final day of Key West…

So by now you know the drill.  No intro needed.  Let’s get it on:

I know what you’re thinking.  It was a rough day in paradise, what with the blue skies, the white sand, the tranquil ocean, the Hitchcockian number of seagulls.  Yeah…uh, could you pass the rum?

Wow.  Yeah, the boyfriend was really suffering.  It was a horrible day in paradise, clearly.  Must be terrible to be in such a warm, sunshiney place…

Well now here’s a tragedy.  Traffic gets so thick in the Keys; you just have the WORST time pulling your ship into port.  I mean, seriously.  Do you know how difficult it is to navigate a three mast mini pirate ship through all that congestion?  And then you always get some soccer mom in a pontoon boat who thinks she owns the bay!  I swear – Black Beard is probably rolling in his grave.  Stupid soccer moms in pontoon boats…

As if things couldn’t get any worse, the Jolly Green Giant’s mistress has clearly misplaced her shoe.  I hear queens of a drag variety partied in this one night, and I’m guessing the JGG’s mistress will probably not be wanting it now.  Although you could probably see that building from space…

Oh wow. Somebody really got confused.  He thought they said “freaks-who-think-they’re-really-vampires tour,” not ghosts for the beach tourists tour! Lestat here clearly thinks he’s too cool for school, what with his glasses and pimp cane.  Silly vampire wannabes…

And this hereby concludes the Key Western artistic adventures of MW^2.  We’ll have more pictures of our shenanigans soon!

Book Covers

Wow.  Words have been pouring out of me the past couple of days, but even a good run of writing needs a break from time to time.  So, I started playing on Photoshop and mocked up a few book covers for my eBooks.  I’m working on three.  Actually, one book – Wake of Darkness – is being pimped out to agents at the moment, but if I don’t snag one soon based on the book’s genre (vampires, which are a little tired in the marketplace, I’ll admit), I’m going to self publish it.

So I thought I’d share the covers, because why not?  The final products may look nothing like these, but this is a fun way to envision them.  Enjoy!!

The first is for my Transmissions from Dating Land book.  I’m pushing this one out first – I’m aiming for mid-October, although that may be pushing my luck.  Stay tuned for more info on this one:

Here’s the one I drew up for Wake of Darkness:

And finally, the cover for The Map of Us.  Lisa – this is the retitled and under revise manuscript that you read for me quite a while ago.  New name, new focus and all that. :)

Stay tuned on info regarding the release of these three books, as well as others from my new micro-pub (I like that better than “indie publishing”).

Transmissions from Dating Land: Your Questions

Well, I realize I haven’t posted another transmission from the crazy land o’ dating in a while, but I am working on the eBook.  Life kinda threw me a curveball and well, the research has hit a bit of a wall so I’m going a new route.  I figure I can write about my own misadventures in the dating world, but I could also ask you for your questions.  I would then answer them here and in the book.

For instance, on Facebook the other day, a friend asked, “Is it too much to ask for me to get a guy who’s not a douche bag?” (To which I answered, “No, it’s not too much to ask, and this is why…”)  Other questions could involve navigating the wide world of Facebook, or who should text who first.  Be creative, people.  And I’m going to be funny about answering them, because I’m not a relationship expert, but I can turn a phrase pretty well.  They can be silly questions too.  Be stupid about them if you want.  I’m game.

So there you go!  Comment below, par favor.  I’ll answer the questions here (probably) with some snarky remark, and then I’ll put them in the book and extend my explanation there.

In other writing news, after the Great Virus Crisis of 2011, I have fixed my computer, thank you Baby Jesus!!!!!!!  I was sweating that one because I would have lost a whole day’s worth of editing (can you say “Sixty pages lost”??).  Also, I’ve begun querying agents for the novel.  If you haven’t read the first chapter, you can find it here.  The title – until my soon-to-be agent decides on a better one – is Wake of Darkness.  I’m excited.

I’m also batting around the idea of a short story or book with the title The High Road to Taos.  Not really sure what it will be about, but I fell in love with that name after I heard it the other day.  I’m chomping on some ideas and I’ll probably start outlining something soon.

And, with Wake of Darkness going to agents and the rewrite officially done, I’m turning back to a little chick lit piece tentatively titled Lunch Dates (but that title will change too.  W.O.D. has had like 6 titles.  Crazy!)  I’ll start hacking that one apart soon, but it’s not so intricate as W.O.D. was, so I should be able to pound it out pretty quickly.

Um, and then I’ve got a short story/flash fiction compilation that I’m putting together.  It’s full of zombies, espionage, and the green fairy.  And of course there’s the other stuff I’ve got going: a psychology study guide for a Florida school district, the Sheldon Cooper fan blog, some magazine stuff – that sort of thing.

And can I just say how much I’m LOVING that summer is over?!  Don’t get me wrong: I love my princess, but I got so much work done yesterday – I couldn’t believe it.  Baby girl went into first grade and she didn’t want me to walk her into class – not that I minded.  I mean, I love my baby, but I’m not the weepy type of mommy who’s hurt by her desire for independence.  I love that she’s comfortable enough with school that she’s all, “Mommy, I’ve got this.”

So yeah, that’s what’s up.  Now, post yo’ questions below homies.  I lurve you all!
