#24 Supermassive Fave

As if the post title didn’t give it away, here’s another of my favorite songs:

#24 Supermassive Black Hole, Muse

Okay, so maybe Muse is on your list of favorites.  Maybe you don’t care for conspiracy theorist, British rockers.  Or, maybe you’re wondering why on earth I’m bringing Greek mythology into my list of faves.

(((crickets)))

Greek mythology.  You know.  The muses?  Ba-da bing!  Er, nevermind.

So anyway, Supermassive Black Hole wasn’t the first Muse song I ever heard, but it was the first Muse song that I ever heard, knowing that it was Muse that was playing it.  Does that make sense or am I blogging in circles again?  Let’s recap: Had heard Muse songs before.  Didn’t know they were done by Muse.  Supermassive Black Hole sought out because it was done by Muse = my official introduction to the band.

Actually (and you’re going to cringe), Supermassive Black Hole was sought out by myself because I’d seen the list of songs for the very first Twilight movie soundtrack online and had no idea what the song sounded like.  Needless to say, I was curious.

I found it easily on their Black Holes and Revelations album, and once I downloaded it, I was over the moon at how different and how ground-breaking they were (and still are).  Supermassive Black Hole quickly became one of my favorite songs, and though I’ve listened to it a ba-zillion times, it still never ceases to disappoint me, and it’s one of my favorite songs to rock out to.

What is one (or some) of your favorite songs?

P.S. Don’tcha love music videos that look like the band was on an acid trip?  Bizarre…

October Sky

I’ve been neglecting my Twitter bands lately, so I’m trying to make up for that this week!  The first randomly selected band is October Sky, and I’m not disappointed.

Their Twitter profile states: “If you like Muse, Coldplay, Keane, you will probably like our music,” but I’d say that if you just like good alternative music, you’ll like October Sky.

Picture from October Sky's Facebook Page

They’re out of Montreal, Quebec and have been playing for 10 ten years; since they were teens.  Talk about a band that stays together, and the chemistry shows.  They’re easy to listen to and none of their songs are too hard or too weird, so they won’t upset more mainstream alternative rock audiences (I realize not everyone is into the bizarre stuff like I can be from time to time).

While they do have some tendencies that lean towards the Muse sound as evidenced by their suite, Dark Visions, October Sky is a band all their own.  Really, they remind me more of a combo of Kevin Rudolf’s urban grunge feel, Civil Twilight’s ballads, Audioslave’s rock, and Muse’s lyricism.  It feels like they’ve really done their homework, but haven’t copied anyone else in doing so…which can be difficult to do.

They cite Muse, Coldplay, and Keane as bands similar to theirs (because, really, if we like those three and we’re told that we’ll like October Sky, what else could they be saying?); I think the assessment’s pretty spot on.  They’re on the spectrum somewhere between Muse and Keane, in my opinion–not a progressive and avant-garde as Muse, not as whiney [sorry!] and soft as Keane.  As for Coldplay?  Well, between you, me, and the internet, I’d rather listen to October Sky any day.

Have a sample; I really think you’ll like them:

6 Pictures from 6 Albums

Recently, a friend of mine sent me something on Facebook entitled “15 Albums.”  The object was to list out 15 albums that have profoundly impacted you at some point in your life.  Well, sure, this is a great exersize for anyone who is familiar with a variety of music genres, but I *know* I probably had some friends read my list and think, “Who? What? Huh?”

So, because this is my own personal little virtual doodle pad, and I can do whatever I want to do here, I figured I’d recreate a shorter version of the list here and select one song (okay, that’s REALLY hard for some of these albums) and post it for you here.  I shooting for 5, but came back with 6.  Enjoy!! ;)

1) Imagine (John Lennon) “Imagine”

2) For Emma, Forever Ago (Bon Iver) “Flume”

3) Lungs (Florence + the Machine) “You’ve Got the Love”

4) Girls and Boys (Ingrid Michaelson) “Far Away”

5) Black Holes and Revelations (Muse) “Glorious”

6) Billion Dollar Babies (Alice Cooper) “Billion Dollar Babies”

The object of the game was to name off the 15 albums in 15 minutes, without really thinking about it all too much, but these six albums were really easy to come up with.  What would be your top album/song choices?
